Literacy

Today we are going to focus mainly on Literacy- using our imaginations, thinking about stories, rhymes and reading and writing.

Imagination:

Visit the 'Literacy Shed' and find the video 'Dangle'.https://www.literacyshed.com/the-thinking-shed.html#

Play the video and PAUSE at 1:55 .

What do the children think will happen if the man in the video pulls the rope?

Discuss with your child what they think will happen, why do they think that, what might happen afterwards? Can they have a go at writing a sentence about what might happen starting their sentence with I think.....

Watch the rest of the video, did they expect that to happen? Do they think the lights will ever go back on? How?

Rhyming:

Words that rhyme have the same sounds at the end. For example : bee/tree, dog/frog, cat/hat

Play the interactive rhyme game: https://www.roythezebra.com/reading-games/words-that-rhyme-with-ug.html and find the words that rhyme with the word bug.

Think of words that rhyme with your own name or that of one of your friends: eg Lily: Lily billy silly willy pilly nilly jumperjilly!

Reading:

Firstly, join in singing the Tricky Words song found on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMyssfAUx0

All children in Maple and Mulberry have heard this song many a time so encourage them to join in !

Play the song again on MUTE/SILENT can they read each tricky word?

If they want a challenge , have a go at Phase 3 or 4 found on the same YouTube page by Epic phonics.

Writing:

Write the letters of the alphabet in LOWER CASE format (Not Capital letters)

Support your child to write on the line and ensure each letter is the right way up and written in the right direction. Do this through showing them the correct way and if necessary writing the letter for them to trace over.

If your child is a confident writer, they can move on to pre-cursive writing. This is the stage before cursive writing where the letters are joined up. Watch the tutorials here for the pre-cursive letter formations and have a go at writing the letters of their name : https://www.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEB&search_query=pre+cursive+handwriting.

If they are able to write their name in this format already, support them to write a full sentence in pre-cursive, such as:

My name is .......

I am..........
