  • National School Sports Week 2019

Wed 26 Jun 2019 Jacqui Barnes

Wow another busy and extremely active week this week and one that has been a lot of fun!

We have had different activities going on every day of the week and the children have had some new experiences as well as some Riverside favourites.

Monday saw the children starting off their Run a mile in the morning to start the day and Year 4 had an afternoon of fun playing Basketball and Football against Year 4's

Tuesday started off with the Run a  mile but also Sunny our resident Zumba instructor delivered sessions to the whole school throughout the day, the children even learnt a Zumba routine for their warm up to the School Games Day on Wednesday, they should all be able to do Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes without any problems whatsoever, they could even teach you I am sure!!

The staff played our Year 5/6 Netball team and I have to say it was a really close game!!! The final score was 6-5 to the staff but I have to say that the school Netball team are really a tough team to beat, they really did not make it easy for us, there  were some great saves from Mehnaz and Tasmiah!!

Wednesday saw the School Games day where children started off with a Zumba warm up and then a 11 stations on different skills, we then had a family picnic on the field and then after lunch we had the all important races where a lot of our children achieved success  and we even saw parents showing resilience as well as our lovely children.  The final winners for 2019 were Falcons for the second year but I have to say all the scores were pretty close but it was such a lovely atmosphere on the field at lunchtime and we even had time to do some longer races due to the addition of our new track.

Thursday the children will Run a mile  to start the day off and  sees the staff playing Year 5 and 6 on the field at lunchtime, along with the Netball and Football teams having a rewards treat of the Go Karts at Riverside and then St Lukes will be playing against the Year 6'sin the afternoon  in Netball, Football  and Rounders......

Friday the children will experience the Run a mile and then the whole school will be experiencing Archery at different times throughout the day, it should be fun, but don't worry, I shall keep you updated....

  • Year 3 and 4 Quadkids Athletics Competition at Newlands Girls School

Wed 19 Jun 2019 Jacqui Barnes

Well another lovely time was had by all this afternoon at Newlands Girls School, I feel like some of our Year 4's are really getting to know the place and feel very comfortable there, at one stage it looked like it wasn't going to go ahead but thankfully after the rain we managed to get going with the competition......

Well done to the Riverside team, another great attempt from Faith, Charlotte, Joella, Hiba, Joel, Judah, Bilal, Ameen and Mustafa, they really did have a good go at the competition and although we were not placed in the top 3 schools, we made some really good throws with the vortex, standing long jump, 400m run and a 50m sprint so there was something for everyone, this is our first time entering a Year 3 and 4 Athleticsteam since I have been at Riverside so I am particularly proud and impressed at the enthusiasm of our children.  Thank you for letting me take a fab group to the event and  it was lovely to see some parents spectating too!!!! It was also lovely to see an ex Riverside pupil who is  now in Year 9, she was so confident and great with all of the children.

The photos say it all so that is what I am going to leave you with to take a look at!!

Here is to us entering and gaining more points next year!!!

  • Year 6 Multi Sports Event at Furze Platt Junior School

    Mon 17 Jun 2019 J Barnes

Wow, yet another privilege to take our children to Furze Platt Junior School today for a multi sports event run by Young Leaders in Year 6  from Furze Platt Junior School.  It was a fabulous afternoon and the children that went with myself and Mrs Cerini were an absolute pleasure to take, according to our healthy choices, we walked to Furze Platt Junior School as part of our warm up!

The event had 12 teams from Riverside,Furze Platt Junior School, Woodlands Park, St Marys, Courthouse, St Edmund Campion, Cookham Dean and St Lukes.  We had a carousel of events that we practiced at first and then we had 5 minutes to score as many points as possible for our schools  and we started off with Tennis, Football, Cricket, Athletics, Tri Golf, Rugby and ended with  New Age Kurling.  We had a really lovely afternoon and as a cool down, we walked back to school with our heads held high! We came 6 out of 12 teams which I believe is the best we have done so far at this particular competition, so well done to Team Riverside, yet another way to make us proud!  Thank you to Mrs Cerini for her help and well done to the children, Sufian, Ali-Sher, Haider, Khadija, Sara, Ummayah, Kylie and Daniyah who tried their very best throughout the competition.

  • Year 5 and 6 Quadkids Competition at Newlands Girls School

Wed 05 Jun 2019 Jacqui Barnes

Wow wow wow, first week back, another competition and on the day of Eid, this time it was an Athletics competition, this did not put off some extra volunteers on the day, I have to say I am so proud of the impeccable behaviour of our children at Riverside, yet again they demonstrated a fabulous attitude towards the competition and they gave their best in all areas.  Thank you particularly to the children like Mehnaz, Nora, Kylie, Oskar and Andrei that literally stepped in at the last minute!! Also a big well done to Jayden, Josh, Hakima and Lucie for already being available for the competition.

The children were split into groups and competed against other schools in a 75m sprint, vortex throw, standing long jump and 600 m.  I have to say, I can see an improvement in the general fitness of our children, must be all those miles a day that they are running during school!!

Although we were not placed in the top 3 boys or girls, (we will be receiving our results soon) on several occasions we managed to come first in our races, so well done to the team, I have included the photos of our wonderful children and I am sure I am not the only proud person to see these children trying their best.
