Writing
Our writing curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children.
EYFS: Drawing Club
In our Reception classes, we use the Drawing Club approach coined by Greg Botrill. The aim of this appraoch is to open up the magic world of tales and story to children whilst at the same time enriching their language skills, developing their fine motor and spending Time Together with them. It immerses children into a world full of imagination where anything can happen.
Children explore fairytales, picture books and cartoons and explore character, setting and then draw and write the adventures based on the story of the week. Through taking this immerse appraoch we aim to:
- Immerse children in the world of story and show them the joy of who you are
- Share a treasure trove of vocabulary with children to open up the playground of language to them
- Give yourself the opportunity to create a library of progress that can be astonishing
- Develop children’s creativity and imagination to show them that they are extraordinary
- Give your children age-appropriate practice that is highly engaging and grounds children in the joy of book snuggling.
Years 1 - 6: Ready Steady Write (Literacy Counts)
In Years 1 - 6, we follow the award-winning Ready Steady Write from Literacy Counts to develop confident, independent and successful writers with high aspirations.
Our writing curriculum is research-informed and impact-proven, carefully designed to support all children to master the foundational skills and write for a clear audience and purpose. Through the use of high-quality, vocabulary-rich texts, we provide exciting and meaningful reasons to write. Children are immersed in literature and taught to craft their writing with precision, using a range of pedagogical approaches, including sentence accuracy, modelled writing and shared writing, as well as regular opportunities for editing.
We value spoken language as a foundation for writing. Through structured talk, drama and vocabulary exploration, children learn how to organise and express their ideas clearly before writing them down. Our aim is for every child – regardless of need – to write fluently and take pride in their work. We want our pupils to leave primary school as enthusiastic writers, ready for the next stage of their education.
